Who is the true champion in any given sport?

It’s a question that gets asked about every one-on-one sport. In boxing, is it Frazier or Ali? In tennis, McEnroe or Connors? In golf, is it the veteran Jack “Golden Bear” Nicklaus or the younger Tiger Woods? Who would win in a pure one-on-one match on any given day?
That’s the question at the heart of Colin Koenig’s thrilling golf novel, “Major Wager: The Pure Round of Golf Jack Challenged Tiger To.” Like the title conveys, it’s a fictional account of one round of golf between the man who has won the most major golf tournaments, and the likely challenger to that record. The stakes are simple. One round of 18 holes of golf between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. And to make it even more interesting, Colin Koenig sets the contest at an unknown golf course for these two great players, without any interference from onlookers. No caddies allowed either. Just Jack and Tiger and a few random squirrels and frogs for all the marbles.

Whether you’re a golf enthusiast, or just a casual fan, this fantasy match plays like a dream and a fantasy come true. Colin Koenig knows the sport of golf well and is a master at describing the layout off each unique and challenging hole, as well as the various shots along the way. When the tension is not on who will play better, it’s on keeping the whole affair secret. With this public golf course closed for the morning, Jack and Tiger make their way through a most unusually challenging course, beset by thick pines, creeks and ponds, sand traps and other course obstacles. As the two men make casual small talk and begin to bond over the three and a half hour game, they also must remain on guard in order to make it through 18 holes without the media finding out about this dream round.

Koenig knows both golfer’s style of play, describing every move they make with the precision, accuracy and skill of a great golfer:

"Woods once again walloped the ball off the tee, his body appearing as a statue-like pretzel following a tornado after the swing. Intensive power derived from precise motion. Another 300-plus yard drive, and straight as an arrow."

Nicklaus and Woods engage is cautious and at times guarded dialogue at the start but slowly bond during the round and the dialogue is pitch perfect:

"Nicklaus again marveled at the resiliency of young Mr. Woods.

“Is there any shot you can’t hit?”

Tiger proudly stuck the four iron back in his golf bag.

“There’s probably a couple,” he conceded. “I just haven’t met them yet."

There is no wasted dialogue and most of it is centered on the game itself. Meanwhile, the reader is left to ponder if these two golf legends can complete the course without anyone discovering the dream match. At one point the two men “break in” to the clubhouse to get some sustenance and, for Woods, a new hat, leaving behind notes of thanks and a few bucks to cover the cost. The ending is as exciting and satisfying as any major championship you’ve ever seen.

It’s a hole-in-one of a book that will leave you pondering other dream match-ups.

Major Wager eBook Colin Koenig Reviews

Written exactly how 2 avid golfers would go at it in a match. Entertaining!
This book is a up close fictional account of a secret golf game between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. It will have you walking the course right along side them. How can they keep it a secret? Will one win or will it end in a tie. I won't give it away. You will want to read it for yourself. I won a copy of this book.
What a refreshingly different book. Everyone has heard of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods and this is the story of a hypothetical match between these two golfing legends.

The story is set in 1997. The young contender, Tiger Woods has proclaimed that he wants to win the most major tournaments in a career and beat the record of eighteen, held by Jack Nicklaus. Jack is not upset by this, in fact he secretly admired the cockiness of the young man. At 57, Jack cannot resist the opportunity to test the skills of the 21 year old, and so he puts the proposal to Tiger, that they play 18 holes of golf.

The author, Colin Koenig then takes the reader on an exciting tour of the 18 holes played. The interaction between these two golfing greats contains great banter, and surprises on the course.

This book is so cleverly thought out, and skilfully written that the drama builds to an excellent crescendo. To tell you more would ruin the story…
Major Wager, The Pure Round of Golf Jack challenged Tiger to by Colin Koenig
Love golf and even ran an online tour for many years. Had so many designed courses to play and each of them was fascinating to find the secrets to.
Enjoy the game of golf and it's not about winning but how you get to the end and with who. This book starts out with Jack and he's asked Tiger privately to play a game and not tell anyone.
He hopes to get Augusta but it's booked so Jack makes plans for a course in KY. What I liked about this course is it's not known to me and the book describes it SO well I feel like I am there with them.
Like discussions along the way especially the one about knickers. Love Payne the most of all the players I'm familiar with.
Personalized by putting a name to each of the holes-wish there was a map or pictures to make us really feel like we are there.
Amazing things happen on the course, priceless!
I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
