Sarah Keller is a "skip tracer," a person who finds people who have attempted to do everything possible to hide, from subpoenas, arrest, whatever it is that demands secrecy and constant moving, a life of living one step ahead of the pursuer. Sarah is very, very good at what she does. But before her job comes her passionate love for her daughter, Zoe; at least that's what she tells anyone who asks. Zoe and Sarah have a very special bond that is now threatened to completely unravel!Right after Sarah serves a subpoena on someone she had tracked relentlessly, Zoe is injured in a bus accident. After being taken to the hospital, the examination reveals two shocking revelations that seem to prove that Sarah is not really Zoe's mother and may be a murderer as well. Now, the hunter becomes the hunted, and the two, with the help of a friend, Danisha, speedily exit from Oklahoma. They are not only being pursued by the FBI and the Oklahoma police, because of another related murder as well, but her ex-boyfriend Nolan's family are in on the chase as well.
Nolan's father is a self-appointed, sociopathic prophet who is a polygamist, murderer, fanatic, thief, dictator, wife and child abuser, and just about every other negative label one can imagine. But one can't just write him off as he views rebellion as treachery and insists on the absolute punishment - death - to all who cross his sick vision and decisions. He wants Zoe now and has put something inside her that will enable him to easily find her - that is his family and followers will as he's presently locked in a maximum security prison.
So the chase grows more and more intense as friend and foe get closer to Sarah and Zoe. There are other threads within this story in which friend becomes foe and vice versa. Every page is filled with high drama and one comes to admire Sarah for her fervor in protecting Zoe and eluding her pursuers. No, it doesn't think the way the reader believes it will; instead it leaves the reader wondering if there will be a another hair-raising sequel to this gripping story.
The Shadow Tracer is great crime fiction, a simple plot with many unexpected twists and turns, enough adrenaline-pumping action to keep a reader up all night during and after one's non-stop reading, and very real scenarios that partially bear truth to realistic stories that have been in the news in the last twenty-five years. Get ready for a rollicking roller coaster ride - Meg Gardiner knows how to spin a deadly mystery/crime novel tale!! Great read!

I'm a big fan of Gardiner's Evan Delaney series and was hoping for another, rather than a stand-alone book. But I needed something new to read. When I started the book, Gardiner, as always, grabbed me with the opening paragraph, and it wasn't long before I was terrified for one character. Part of me wanted to put the book down, worried that the particular character would be sacrificed on an author's altar of publicity and drama. But the bigger part of me trusted Gardiner to send me out on a thrilling ride, make me hold my breath and madly flip pages, and end the story satisfied with a tale well told. The trust was well placed.
While I'm still hoping for another Evan Delaney book, I'd definitely read a sequel to this book.
On a side note, Gardiner's other books are pretty dang good, too.
Our heroine is a skip-tracer. She became one instead of traveling the world as she had originally planned when her sister died, leaving her with her niece to raise alone.
But even though she changed locations and her name she is found by the entity that killed her sister and has to run for the child's life. The child's father belonged to a family cult and wants the child.
Throughout the rest of the book she runs, is followed, makes the acquaintance of an older woman who helps her escape, but is always only one step away from being caught.
A true page turner. If "child in danger" stories are your interest, this is a good book for you. Our heroine's story comes out in bits and pieces throughout the book, the Federal Marshall who betrayed her and helped her at the same time, the woman who helps, all work to make this an intense and fulfilling read.
If you like fast action books that read like a television show, you will enjoy this book. I read the entire book and enjoyed most of it but gave it a three star rating because there were several plot points that confused me and because the characters either weren't that interesting or were caricatures (bad guys were really bad, good guys the strong silent type). This book was described as being about a woman who is living off the grid - she is not. She is definitely on the grid, using her real name, and in a highly visible and somewhat dangerous job finding people who have - guess what? Skipped out on some legal entanglement. The book started off strongly but then there were multiple jumps in time to introduce characters and their back stories - it got a bit confusing from this point on.
Meg Gardiner's eleventh novel, The Shadow Tracer, continues her mastery of thrills and adrenaline pumping suspense.
Sarah Keller, a skip tracer who has learned the ins and outs of deadbeats hiding from responsibility suddenly finds herself on the other side of her profession. She has been living in hiding for five years. Her daughter, following a routine exam at a hospital as a result of a minor accident, is discovered to have a microchip embedded in her head. Sarah instantly knows who is behind this and knows the only way to keep her daughter and herself safe is disappear.
Naturally this is easier said than done. With the knowledge that the people who want her daughter are back on the hunt, she flees with the aide of her employer, Danisha Helms (a character I'd like to see again) and a US Marshal who helped her once before, the race to escape becomes far more complicated by an obsessed FBI agent with an agenda all his own.
Ms. Gardiner sets the showdown in a thoroughly unique setting, the imagery of which would easily make the jump to the big screen and definitely have moviegoers on the edge of their seats. I recommend this novel to everyone who thrive on high speed, blood pumping energy.
