The Necro Device MT Dismuke 9781468170528 Books Reviews
I found this book to be built around a very interesting premise. Without spoiling, this is not your " found a dead body and I have 48 hours to prove I didn't do it" usual stuff. That would be the high point of this review.
While I am not by any means an English major, this book was hard to read. To blame was awkward or missing punctuation, run-on sentences, and the incorrect use of a word. For example, there is a big difference between the words " aisle " and " isle." "Emergence" is not a substitute for the world "emergency."
Also, while I understand efforts to establish the qualities and characteristics of character-building, every little movement and nuance is described way past the point of readability. At one time, the female protagonist actually tells her husband that he doesn't have to tell her how to do every single step in a certain procedure. I cheered! Yes, she was tired of it just like I was.
This is still a good story, with some great twists at the end. The overwritten interaction of the characters just makes it a little difficult to read. I would still recommend it, though.
I am only just a little more than half way through this book. Sometimes it is good and makes me want to keep reading. On the other hand the writing is horrific and awful. It does switch back from the present tense to an occasional past tense, which in a way makes it really hard to read. Usually I would be finished with this size book by now, but I have to keep taking breaks from it because it is really not written that well. To be honest, I thought a little kid was writing it and somehow got published. It really makes me think that there was absolutely NO editing whatsoever on this book. I can't tell you how many times and word "too" should have used instead of the word "to". That's why I thought it was a little kid that had written it. Hell, if this kind of crap can get published, I might as well start my novel, because I can write a hell of amlot better than that. It also looks as though a Thesaurus was used repeatedly just to try to change of some of the descriptive words so they weren't used over and over, but the words that were used instead are NEVER used in real speaking life. When writing, one wants to write as if one were speaking, that is if they know how to speak correctly in the first place. Another reason I thought it was written by a little kid. But there are some good parts, the author definitely knows a little bit about the anti-anxiety drug Mary was given by that Dr. Renalds, and where did he come up with the spelling of some of these names? Sounded like he might have started the book when he was a little kid , but with all the revisions it still really wasn't good enough to be published. Don't think I would read another book by this author. I like a well written book where I learn something, even though it is pure fiction. Might just chuck the book without finishing it.
On reading the first chapter, I thought this is going to be good. Next, I proceed to the following couple of chapters and I have that sinking feeling, that I am going to be disappointed. It was the dialogue between the family, I found it grating and this was a bit of a let down all the way through the book. Having a teenager myself I could relate to the scenario although Felicia was at the worst end of the spectrum in being difficult, provocative and downright obnoxious. Once the story got underway and the plot unfolded, the story came into its own and I found myself enthralled waiting to see what would happen next. I certainly was not disappointed. A fairly complex scenario once all the characters were introduced, but it wasn't a problem keeping track of who was who and where and how they fitted in. Good characterisations, you knew who you liked and didn't like. Some downright sinister situations and a wonderful twist at the end. If you like creepy, then this is one book for you.
